How Do Shock Absorbers Work?
Shock absorbers, technically known as dampers, are an important component of automotive suspensions. As what its name suggests, this equipment has innovative features designed to “absorb shock” impulse, making your driving experience safe, efficient and comfortable.
Shock absorbers adjust to all road conditions by maximizing the tire contact with the road and dampening the oscillation of the auto’s leaf prings. Contrary to popular belief, shock absorbers do not actually support the weight of a vehicle, but rather control the movement of suspension and spring. They operate by converting kinetic energy into thermal or heat which is then dissipated through hydraulic fluid.
Moreover, auto shock absorbers are intended to minimize or control bounce and maximize the performance of your tires. Being the main suspension tools that can absorb shock and bounce whenever you stop or accelerate, shock absorbers are specifically created to reduce movements in the car while on the road.
So how do shock absorbers work? Here is the common set-up or design of auto shock absorbers. A piston is connected to the tip of the piston rod and operates against hydraulic fluid located in the pressure tube. While driving, the hydraulic fluid is forced through orifices which only allow a small amount of fluid into the piston.
The degree of resistance depends on the speed or acceleration of the suspension as well as the number and size of orifices. In a nutshell, the faster the suspension, the more resistance from the shock absorber. Auto shock absorbers also control the weight of the vehicle during transitions. So if you want to have an efficient ride, this car accessory will be of great help.
